What is Modesty? Or the Meaning of Modesty

"Modesty" typically refers to having or showing a moderate or humble estimate of one's abilities, achievements, or importance. It can also refer to being unassuming or moderate in the way one dresses or behaves. Modesty is often associated with humility, simplicity, and a lack of pretentiousness.

[9] In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

Let us examine 1 Timothy 2:9

1. Women adorn themselves in modest apparel

A. A women should not dress like a harlot or Jezebel. She should dress respectful and graceful.

In today mainstream media is telling little girls and women to dress sexy to be accepted by society. Ask ourselves this question why sex appeal is in fashion, music, art, photography and movies? The mainstream media is grooming our young girls at an early age to devalue themself. The exposure to sex appeal has desensitize young women or older women in society. Therefore, she will not see sex appeal is inappropriate.

2. Shamefacedness and sobriety

A. The definition of Shamefacedness- is a sense of shame or honor, modesty, bashfulness, reverence, regard for others, respect.

B. The definition of Sobriety is freedom from intoxication, to be sober, self-restraint, discretion and prudence.

Women should have self-control how she speak and carry herself with dignity. Instead, we see more women are becoming loose, having no value and no standard.

3. not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array

A. Having extravagant and lavish hairstyle. It's becoming a vanity. It is important to have your hair gracefully and modest.

Dressing modesty is not oppression. Modest allows every woman to know her true identity. A woman identity is not defined by society or this world. Modest empower every young girl, young women and older women to stand strong and love yourself. Dressing modesty is a blessing.
